Memento
ASSIGNMENT || "Use no more than three materials to create a sculpture that can be held in one hand."
Memory: It was a Sunday afternoon and my friend and I had a heart to heart. The sun was beating in while we shared intimate parts of our lives with each other. This experience brought us closer together and taught me more about myself. I had recently discovered the power and influence that music has on individuals. There is strength in the confidence it takes to sing and vulnerability in the pureness of one's voice. So I decided to pull out my ukulele as our day came to a close. We both felt the healing that occurred as we continued to sing.
"ON LONGING":
Sentence One - "The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale"
We are a small part of a big world.
The symbolism and background create context and take me back to a specific place and memory.
Sentence Three - "The souvenir reduces the public, the monumental and the 3D into the miniature, in which can be enveloped by the body"
Sentence Four - "To have a souvenir of all the exotic is to possess both a souvenir and trophy"
This picture acts as a souvenir of my trip to Europe and it is a trophy because it cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world, yet I can take it with me wherever I go.
Sentence Five - "The place of origin must remain unavailable in order for desire to be generated"
This picture signifies the significance of "place" for me. It is taken from my dock at home, so the beauty of the sunset reminds me of the beautiful memories I have associated with this specific place.
Concept: I wanted to display the fluidity and power of music that I experienced through this memory. I created a sharp edge to exemplify the brightness of the sun and the corners of the window. The string was to show the soft aspects of music and the emotion expressed trough individual sound. The pegs at the end represent my friend and I, because it holds the entire structure together.
